Bradford faces substantial cuts in its services next year thanks to new spending targets announced by environmental secretary Michael Hesletine in the Rate Support Grant Settlement. The minister has set Bradford's target for 1983/84 at a ceiling of just over £167 million this year, which is £16 million less than the cost of all the Council's services.

A Keighley architect who is a collector of Egyptian and similar antiques has bought an Egyptian mummy 3,000 years old. Mr Clough took the mummy from the King Richard House showplace in Scarborough back to West Yorkshire on his roof rack.
