Funny man Russ Abbot was in sparkling form when he turned up at the Rank Bingo Hall in Princes Way, Bradford, to accept hundreds of toys on behalf of social services. The toys had been donated by customers of the bingo hall for the Pennine Radio appeal, but they had missed the deadline. Now social services have said they will distribute the presents to under-privileged children.

Bradford Festival Choral Society is reaping the reward of its well planned centenary festivals of last year. By encouraging new additions to its audience by the introduction of industrial patrons and students, a livelier interest in the society's music making was created. The present season has met with both outstanding artistic and box office success. Last night's Messiah had at least 500 more applicants for tickets than the 2,000 capacity at St George's Hall.
