The leader of Bradford Council's Labour group and former lord mayor Councillor Danny Coughlin has been dumped by his own ward party. At a re-selection meeting the members of University ward in the Bradford West constituency voted in Terry Rooney, a political unknown, as their candidate for the municipal elections in May.

A deafening explosion lasting nearly ten seconds, accompanied by a blinding flash, rocked the centre of Keighley yesterday.
The blast was caused by an auxiliary transformer blowing up at the central electricity authority's sub-transforming station in Coney Lane. Keighley firefighters, whose headquarters are less than 100 yards from the station, were at the scene straight away.
