Hillards won their planning appeal to build a new supermarket in Ilkley. The original planning application for the former railway site was turned down and the company decided to appeal. The new store meant another 560 jobs in Ilkley.

Pupils clubbed together to buy a school dinner lady a budgerigar as a leaving present to replace one she lost some time ago. Mrs M Aldridge, of Cross Green, Otley, was dinner lady at Otley CE Infants School for 13 years.
