50 years ago: The “Year of the Long Hair” was referred to by Mr RV Dawson, headmaster of Hanson Boys’ School, in his report at the school’s speech day at St George’s Hall, Bradford.
He stated that observing which boys had adopted this particular fashion he was tempted to remark that the length of hair seemed to be in inverse proportion to intelligence.
He said, however, that this was not always the case, but did add: “Unfortunately, cleanliness and tidiness do not seem to be among the virtues which most boys acquire readily.”
