Who was the mystery cricketer featured in the Past Times of September 9 among a selection of photographs from the Shipley and Windhill area? Reader Mr R P Smith thinks he could have been George Illingworth, brother of Jonas "Joney" Iliingworth, pictured.
"Joney was my uncle, having married my Aunt Alice Potter, who was the sister of Harry Potter," he writes. "He is reputed to have been the first man to win two Priestley Cup winners' medals. Unfortunately he was hit by a speedy cricket ball and died shortly afterwards. He had two sons and had a confectioner's shop in Wrose. This is not exciting news but it might help people to remember the good old days!".
Which is what this page is all about, of course.
Geoff Smith, on the other hand, thinks the cricketer could be George Herbert Hirst, who played for Yorkshire and England.
"He was a right-handed batsman and a left-handed bowler and was a colleague of my boyhood hero Wilfred Rhodes," writes Mr Smith. "In 1908 Hirst and Rhodes dismissed the Australian Test team for 36 runs. The next Australian match was against Yorkshire, and the Aussies scored 23. Hirst took five for 9. In 1905 Hirst scored 341 runs for Yorkshire against Leicestershire."
The same page included a photograph of a crowded Kirkgate, in Shipley.
Mr A Shipman thinks the occasion could be the day of Queen Victoria's funeral because none of the people shown in the picture looks really cheerful.
That's true. They don't appear to be in much of a mood for celebration.
Thanks for your suggestions.
