Ever since organised transport services started in Bradford in 1882, the streets have witnessed the passage of horse trams, steam trams, electric trams, trolleybuses and motor buses.

In his new book, Bradford writer David J Croft has assembled an impressive collection of 200 photographs dating from the earliest years of public transport to the present.

A lifelong road and rail transport enthusiast, David has written a number of books and articles on local transport.

He worked for Bradford Library Service for nearly 40 years and is currently a volunteer at the Trolleybus Museum at Sandtoft.

For many years, the services were under municipal control, but several other operators have come and gone. The city pioneered trolleybus operation in 1911 and has the distinction of being the last place in Britain to operate the form of transport that was environmentally-friendly before it became fashionable.

As well as traditional Bradford vehicles, less well-known ones are highlighted in the book, alongside those preserved in museum collections.

There are some delightful old photographs, not least in the chapter on electric trams. There’s a splendid tram decorated specially for the extension of the route from Wyke to Bailiff Bridge, pictured on May 17, 1913, and an illuminated tram built for the June 1911 Coronation of King George V and Queen Mary, which was used for other events in later years.

There are some pictures of old trolleybuses taken in the 1920s, including one of six built at Thornbury Works in 1922/23 for use on the Bolton-Bankfoot route. It is photographed at Laisterdyke in its original varnished teak livery.

More recent vehicles include the red buses of the West Yorkshire Road Car Company, part of Bradford’s bus scene from 1928 to 1998, and a 1986 Yorkshire Rider vehicle. Bradford Transport will evoke fond memories among those of you who can remember these vehicles in action, and will also acquaint younger enthusiasts with the district’s tremendous transport heritage.
