Mary Lund from Thackley writes to us with her memories of a “peaceful oasis” in the Bradford sky, pictured above.
She writes: “I worked for the firm of Life Assurance & Pensions on the fourth floor of Arndale House from 1987 to 1995, and I frequently used the rooftop garden at lunchtime – access was gained from the second floor of Arndale House.
“It was a lovely peaceful oasis away from the streets of the busy city centre. If I remember correctly, there were a couple of ponds with water lillies and plants, shrubs and trees neatly set out. There were several seats but I don’t recall ever seeing more than one or two people there.
“Howard House on Bank Street belonged to Rackhams and I think their restaurant on the second floor also looked out onto the garden. I remember this restaurant being waiter-service only, as opposed to the self-service restaurant in the main Rackhams store.
“One of the perks of my job in Arndale House was a monthly supply of luncheon vouchers which enabled me to dine in style occasionally in the Howard House restaurant.”
