The name of the toy stall pictured on this page, above, a couple of weeks ago was J B Race Ltd, popularly known as Race's. My thanks to Janet Auty and C D Metcalfe for passing on that information.

In the 1950s and 1960s Bradford was well catered for when it came to toys, with the bigger stores like Busby's, the Co-op Emporium having large departments, and smaller set-ups such as Race's proving popular too.

Mr Metcalfe says his father worked for Race's until he was called up in the Second World War. After the war he returned to the job and took over the business when Mr Race retired. It had celebrated its centenary six years before that photograph was taken in 1972.

He recalls: "The photo shows the compartments, in the bottom left of the picture, which contained the soldiers mentioned in your article. These used to be displayed in military rows but after the stall was altered to make way for the gents toilets there was not sufficient display space. This also stopped the game of knocking them over to see the toppling domino effect!"
