On this page on February 6, we presented a short piece on Giovanna McFarlane, nee Mastrantuono, who was originally from Italy and who had died in January in Manorlands Hospice.

Unfortunately, the information we had been given was lacking in some key points, and we have had contact with Mr Ian McFarlane, of Gilstead, who was Giovanna’s husband of 33 years.

We are pleased to set the record straight with Mr McFarlane’s own memories of his wife, who certainly seemed to be a remarkable woman.

Mr McFarlane writes: “Giovanna came to England from Marcone in Italy at the age of 23 in 1969 to work in textiles and make a better life for herself. She worked as a mender at John Foster’s Mill for many years and made numerous friends.

“Giovanna married in 1977 and lived happily with her husband Ian at their lovely home overlooking the Aire Valley near Bingley. She was a very kind, willing and friendly person, always ready to help family, neighbours and friends.

“She was extremely proud of her home, especially the beautiful garden with far-reaching views.

“Sadly, Giovanna passed away at Manorlands Hospice on January 6, hugely supported by her loving and devoted husband Ian, dear brother Carmine and sisters-in-law.

“Giovanna’s family and friends in Marcone also held a funeral mass which was very well attended, as she visited them regularly and never forgot her roots.

“Giovanna also leaves a brother Rosario and sister Lina in Italy, and a sister Flora in Adelaide, Australia. All who knew and loved Giovanna are left with a wealth of very happy memories.”
