In Remember When? (December 4) you speculated on the date of the photographs of Forster Square and Market Street, the conclusion being that they must have been taken in the 1940s.
I would say a few years later, about 1950-51. Clues: the road surface of Forster Square appears to be tarmacadam, which covered the granite setts in the summer of 1950.
Also, the street lights in Market Street are gas-operated, which places the photo prior to electrification in 1953.
