A pre-retirement clear-out of drawers and folders unearthed this gem from April, 1970.
The occasion was the final at the Penny Farthing Club in Bradford of the Group of 70 contest, run by the T&A.
My then-colleague Leon Hickman and I had sat through the heats in earlier weeks and had chosen eight groups to battle it out for the glorious prize of £50 cash and a £50 Orange hand microphone.
Winners were Fresh Garbage, pictured with me in the middle. Penny Farthing manager Bill McGarry is handing over the cheque. The man on the right is Derek Johns, an A&R man from CBS Records, who was to give the winning group a studio recording test in London.
Whatever happened to Fresh Garbage? And what happened, too, to the Bradford group who came second, Scorched Earth (they picked up a £10 prize) or to Auroborus, who came third and won a fiver?
