AN old photograph of the Westgate area of Bradford, which appeared on this page a couple of weeks ago, has prompted memories from readers.

The picture, taken in June, 1951, showed a greengrocer loading items into his window display from a cart outside his shop.

Leslie Wallace got in touch to say that the greengrocer also had a stall in nearby John Street Market.

"My family, the Asquiths, had five fruit and vegetable stalls behind his stall in the market. We also had a shop in West Bowling," recalled Mr Wallace. "There was a club higher up and Wilfred Pickles and Violet Carson (who played Ena Sharples in Coronation Street) once came to do their show, Have A Go, from there. It was popular on the radio."

Cedric Boyd, from Thackley, remembers L Sugden Home Furnishings, also in the picture. "I was an apprentice there for six years, just after leaving Princeville School in 1952," he said. "They sold furniture in the shop and it was made in a workshop upstairs, which overlooked the open air market. I did an apprenticeship in upholstery before I was called up for National Service.

"The 'L' on the shop sign was for Leo Sugden. If you walked through the archway next to the shop you could cut through to John Street Market."

Also visible on the photograph was a cafe next to the shop. "It was called Billy's," said Mr Boyd. "It was run by Billy Hill who was the drummer in a band, they used to play at dances in the textile hall opposite the shop."
