Cleckheaton hammer thrower Sarah Holt admits sun, sea and sand is the order of the day after bringing the curtain down on a disappointing season at the Jumps & Throws Fest in Birmingham on Saturday.

Holt began this season with high hopes of forcing her way into the Great Britain squad for the London 2012 Olympics but things have not gone to plan for the 2009 European under-23 bronze medallist.

Beginning the season with a personal best of 66.46 metres, Holt had targeted achieving, at the very least, the UK Athletics London 2012 qualification B standard of 69m on more than one occasion.

Holt, 25, did manage an encouraging 68.50m in early June but that was as good as it got, ensuring she had to watch on as 21-year-old Sophie Hitchon was Great Britain’s only entrant into the London 2012 competition.

Missing out on the Olympics prompted Holt to take an extended break from athletics and, while she made a comeback to compete in Birmingham, she could only finish third.

And Holt admitted the end of the season could not come quickly enough.

She said: “I’m finished for the season now. I’m going to go on holiday and get some rest. I’m looking forward to getting away from it all for a bit.

“I’ve had a good three weeks of doing nothing, playing different sports and just taking a bit of a break. I was glad to compete, but I’m just happy to be done for the season.”

Holt was the first to admit that ring-rustiness was the reason that she could only manage a best throw of 63.77m in Birmingham, good enough for bronze behind winner Susan McKelvie and former British record holder Zoe Derham.

And Holt also revealed there are no guarantees she will return to hammer throwing in 2013.

“I’ve had a bit of time off, so this was just about getting back into the swing of things. I’d have liked to have placed better, but I’m just happy to have done it,” she added.

“I guess I was a bit rusty. I’d not competed for about six weeks. I just needed a bit of time off, but it was good to compete again.

“I don’t know when I’ll be competing again, but it won’t be this season.”
