Airienteers were out in force last weekend in the Urban Orienteering event at Filey – a spectator-friendly format which is becoming increasingly popular, requiring accurate navigating at speed.
Airienteers had no fewer than five winners on the day. At junior level, there were wins for Helen Wood from Leathley in the 3.4km W16 race in 29.06; for Florence Haines from Ilkley in the 4km W18 race in 30.03, and for Guiseley’s Joe Woodley, who won the 3.4km M16 race in a sizzling 22.21.
At senior level, veteran international Ruth Ker won the 4.7km W40 race in 37.36, just four seconds ahead of Cleveland’s Jill Libby, while Susan Stevens of Ilkley had a good run to win the 4km W55 race in 36.50.
Other podium places were achieved by Heather Phipps (third at W40), Cerys Jones (second at W18), Beth Woodley (third at W18) and Lucy Haines (third at W16).
On Sunday, a few Airienteers stayed on for the regional event at Barnes Cliff, just north of Scarborough. The best results were Lucy Haines (W14) and Cerys Jones (W18), both of whom won, while at senior level, Andrew Kelly from Menston had a good run for second place at M50, while Tony Carlyle from Harden was third at M55.
