Baildon’s Steve Watkins had to settle for second spot at the Northern Night Orienteering Championships in Lancashire.
He finished runner-up to Martin Bagness of Cumbria on the 5.4km blue course in 49.22, with Rob King of Ilkley in 28th place.
Ilkley’s Peter Haines was fourth on the 4.1km green course, with fellow Airienteers competitor David Alcock of Leeds fourth after having a good run in the 6.9km open event, with another Airienteer, Andis Celinkis, in eighth.
Watkins was second again in the Airienteers Night Score League, earning the same amount of points as winner Ian Nixon of Leeds, but finishing over a minute behind, with Alcock over a minute further back in third.
Meanwhile, three Airienteers runners currently lead the standings in the Yorkshire Night League with two races to go: Paul Liepins for the senior men, Steve Watkins for the vets men, and Alex Watkins for the vets women.
Rolf Crook ran out the winner at Rothwell Country Park in the latest event of the Airienteers’ O-Lite series, with Lee Beavers second and Ruth Kerr third.
The next event in the series is at Temple Newsam on Saturday, February 5, with the next event in the Night Score League at Headingley on Wednesday, February 2.
