Bingley Harriers’ ladies team have reached the British Athletics League final for the third time in four years after winning the TEN IN 100 CUP regional semi-final at Blackpool.
This competition is a snappy concept featuring six track and four field events contested in 100 minutes, followed by a medley relay.
Bingley notched firsts from Chloe Holden-Wilson in the 800 metres, Sarah Jarvis in the 3000m, Emma Jones in the javelin and Jessica Mayho in the hammer.
The quartet of Kerisa Bogle, Arianna Zenti, Holden-Wilson and Joanne Oates rounded off with a victory in the medley relay, beating Northern Division One club Blackpool convincingly.
Bingley’s men finished third as in-form Demetric Nelson won the 200m and Oliver Robinson impressively took the sprint hurdles, rather than running his usual 400m hurdles.
Baildon Runners have discovered the trick of unearthing new runners. After blooding Chris Burke for the Washburn Valley relays, Ben Merriman made his debut at the GOLDEN ACRE RELAYS.
Baildon’s A team was a totally different line-up to Washburn. Merriman had caught the eye with a competitive showing at the St Bede’s inter-club relays earlier in the month and stepped up with a superb 17min 02sec on the second leg of this 3x2.9-mile event, organised by Abbey Runners close to their Adel base.
A strong first leg from Steve Watkins (16:07) and a 15:43 finish from Quentin Lewis completed the picture and saw the team home in sixth overall.
Captain Lewis said: “This is a really good result for the club, finishing ahead of a strong Pudsey Pacers Vets team and just behind Pudsey & Bramley in a quality field.”
A great turn-out had seen 80 teams tackle the twisting and undulating course through parkland and woods, despite damp conditions.
Otley entered three teams, with the two men’s sides in the top ten. Eccleshill had four teams out and Pudsey Pacers six.
Baildon’s mixed team of Don Johnson, Damian Pearson and Denise Johnson managed a creditable 53rd place overall.
Leading positions: 1 York Acorn Men’s A, 2 Up & Running, 3 Abbey Men’s A, 4 Wakefield Harriers, 5 Pudsey & Bramley Vets, 6 Baildon Men’s A, 7 Pudsey Pacers Vets, 8 Otley Men’s A; 9 Otley Men’s B, 10 Horsforth Harriers Men’s A.
