Baildon’s Chloe Ryall claimed some major scalps and her first race win last Sunday at Dewsbury Moor in the final race of the West Yorkshire Winter League.

Ryall triumphed ahead of Jenny Latham (Leeds Bradford Triathlon) and Karen Pickles of Pudsey Pacers on a relatively flat, two-lap 4.3-mile course, with stretches of frozen, rutted ground disguised by fresh snow.

But getting there on treacherous road conditions was harder than the race itself.

The victory was enough to give Ryall fourth place in the series overall, behind Pickles, Donna Edmonson-Booker (LBT) and Jess Riley (Stainland).

The men’s race ended in a display of sportsmanship as Stainland’s Ben Mounsey handed first place to Rick Findlow (LBT).

Findlow had been motoring, ten seconds clear, before taking a wrong turn with 200 metres to go and having to retrace his steps, before technically crossing the line in third.

The series standings were unaffected with Mounsey victorious ahead of Quentin Lewis (Baildon) and Gav Mulholland (Stainland), who were third and fourth on the day.

The League offers trophies, commemorating two of its most stalwart competitors, for the most improved runners over the series.

The Dowson trophy went to Julie Parker (Idle) and the Turpin trophy to John Pop (Pudsey Pacers).

Topping the points for the age-category prizes were Julie Field of Stainland (female over-35), Sharon Hague of Pudsey (F40), Jayne Butterworth of Skipton (F45), Flora Skidmore of Dewsbury (F50), Aileen Baldwin of Stainland (F55) and Sue Coates of Baildon (F60).

Among the men, Paul Gaile (Pudsey) was first male over- 40, while Richard Barrett (Skipton), Steve Hall (Skipton), Jim Wheldon (Pudsey), and Bob Ambler (Stainland) were first in the over-45, 50, 55 and over-60 categories respectively.

The result left Stainland Lions ahead of Pudsey Pacers in the team standings and both clubs go on to contest the national finals at Heanor AC in Derbyshire later in the year.
