A record 117 teams completed Sunday’s Calderdale Way Relay.
The country’s top fell runners mixed with local road runners who struggle over the six eight to 11 mile moorland legs.
The premier teams of Salford, Dark Peak (Derbyshire), Pudsey & Bramley and Bingley had their usual tussle.
Calder Valley’s Ben Mounsey and Karl Gray led after the first leg from Greetland to Cragg Vale.
Then Salford and Dark Peak swapped the lead on the next two legs to Todmorden and Blackshaw Head.
From there, Salford took and maintained a five-minute lead to win in 6hr 1min 33sec.
The Brownlee brothers, Alistair and Jonathan, did the fastest run on leg four from Blackshaw Head to Wainstalls, and brought Bingley into contention.
But Jamie Noon and Paul Stevenson, on leg five, allowed Pudsey & Bramley to nick third place from Bingley by the end.
Saturday’s rain and mild weather had cleared the sheet ice on the fells.
Sunday proved to be ideal conditions, with blue sky sighted mid-afternoon, though leg five to Shelf was its usual boggy self.
Keighley & Craven’s men finished 17th, with Ilkley in 18th. Bingley’s B-team were 24th and Pudsey Pacers 33rd.
An impressive first outing by Airedale Athletics, in their new kit, shows that they will soon be competitive with these.
Hardy Matamala ran most of leg four with a sprained ankle and his partner, Will Kerr, with no sole, but they still managed a respectable time.
Skipton AC were outstanding winners of the Mixed category, finishing 21st overall, with excellent runs by Sarah Dugdale and Claire Pearson on leg five, and Steve Sayer and Jonathan Mitcham on the final one.
Ilkley Ladies won their race. Bingley’s Mary Wilkinson and Sue Becconsall took a strong lead on the first leg, but Ilkley’s Emma Barclay and Sally Makir were leading by Todmorden.
Sally Morley and Sabine Hausworth ran a marvellous fifth leg, and by the end had a ten-minute lead over Bingley, winning in 7hr 26min 21sec.
