THE inaugural HORTON PARK PARKRUN last Saturday had a promising turnout of 118 runners, with local clubs Eccleshill, Baildon and Hyde Park Harriers having six runners apiece and Queensbury and Saltaire seven.
Five people had never taken part in a 5K parkrun before: Mick Krelle (26min 16sec), Simon Sheasby (26:48), Helen Trevisani (33:10) and primary-schooler Evie Buckley, running with her mother Ann (48:02).
The course records have now been set by Helen Wright (Keighley & Craven) in 20min 29sec and by Robin Tuddenham (Todmorden Harriers) in 18min 39sec.
Will Kerr broke his own course best at Lister Park on Saturday in 16min 49sec before heading off to Edinburgh for the EDINBURGH HALF-MARATHON.
He ran 74min 12sec, breaking his personal best by 40 seconds.
A lead group of five were well clear at halfway, going through 10K at 32min 34sec. A further seven were ahead of Kerr at halfway, but, unlike several others, he maintained a perfect 5min 37sec per-mile pace to finish 13th, despite having to run a good stretch alone.
Also in Scotland, but the previous weekend, the JURA FELL RACE took place.
The 17-mile race climbs 7,000 feet, and was still hardy through the damp, underfoot conditions, even if on the day the weather was reasonable, albeit misty on the tops.
Jasmin Paris, from Carnethy Hill Runners – Scotland's premier fell club – went astray early on but still had enough left to finish a superb sixth overall and take almost two minutes off Angela Mudge's course record in 3hr 38min 43.
Paris was the 2013 Three Peaks winner. Finlay Wild (Lochaber) won by 15 minutes in 3hr 13min 27sec, with Bingley's Ian Holmes third in 3hr 30min 30sec.
Ilkley's Dave Wilby wrote: "I ran conservatively for the first five peaks and then emptied what little was left in the tank over the last two summits and the 5.5km road run back to the finish.
"I managed to take a couple of minutes off my PB but, more importantly, claim the sub-four hour prize of an engraved whisky glass, finishing 14th in 3:56."
Wilby was barely a minute behind Andrew Jebb (Bingley) in 11th.
