Jonny Brownlee claimed his second consecutive win in this year’s International Triathlon Union World Series with victory in Madrid.
The 23-year-old Bingley Harrier, who was also winning this race for the second year in succession, led almost from start to finish in the Spanish capital.
He was in the lead group out of the water, led a breakaway group in the bike leg and never looked back as he completed the race in 1hr 50min 42sec.
“It’s a good triathlon course this one; as I keep saying, it’s a pure triathlon course,” said Brownlee, who was an Olympic bronze medalist in London last summer.
“Our group was incredible there. All the other riders did turns throughout the race and it was a fair race I think, so I enjoyed it. But it was tough – it’s always tough.”
Javier Gomez finished second on home soil to claim the lead in the overall 2013 series standings on 2,744 points, while Ivan Vasiliev of Russia was third. Brownlee is now sixth overall on 1,600 points.
Brownlee’s brother Alistair, the reigning Olympic champion, missed yesterday’s race because of an ankle injury.
The next round takes place at Kitzbuhel in Austria on the first weekend in July.
