Saturday was county cross-country championship day across England.

The Yorkshire Championships took place at Lightwater Valley Park, near Ripon.

In the senior men's race, Jonny Brownlee (Bingley Harriers) had to settle for bronze, as in last year's Olympic triathlon, such was the quality of the 240-strong field.

Gold went to Meles Ozbazaghi (Sheffield RC) in 33min 9sec. Second was James Wilkinson (Leeds City).

Guiseley-based Skyrac had excellent performances by non-scoring Daniel Garbutt in sixth and Chris Thornton (38th).

Tom Adams (Ilkley) was 14th, Will Smith (Keighley & Craven) 28th and Spenborough's Kevin Ogden 35th.

Bingley were third club behind Leeds City's A and B teams, with strong runs by Ian Holmes (17th), Stu MacDonald (37th) and evergreen John Convery (48th).

In the senior women's event, Bingley's Emma Clayton was second in 21min 47sec behind Leeds City international Susan Partridge (21:22).

Emma's clubmate Jo Buckley, recently stricken by flu, was still 15th (23:25), with Helen Glover (Keighley & Craven) 20th. Skyrac's Hannah Brown, in 26th, was third under-20.

In the under-17 girls, Spen's star Bronwen Owen (14:48), was a clear winner over the equally impressive Georgia Malir (Ilkley, 15:31), with Keighley's Zara Knappy eighth.

In the under-15s, Ilkley's Sarah Pickering, Lucy Haines and Lucy Williamson were 11th, 14th and 15th, with Eleanor Robinson (Keighley & Craven) 13th.

Bingley's Victoria Merrick (sixth) just pipped Skyrac's Amy Francis for local honours in the under-13 girls, but Amy, Pauline Hall (ninth) and Lily Greenhalgh (32nd) helped Skyrac to team silver in the event.

In the boys' races, outstanding local performers included the second place by Emile Cairess (Bingley) in the under-15s.

Spen's trio of Jack Robertshaw, Joshua Woodcock-Smith and Simon Bolland were seventh, ninth and 11th in the under-20 men. Wharfedale fell specialist James Hall finished sixth in the under-17s in a field of just 48.

In a better attended under-13 race, Skyrac were team third, thanks to Ben Thompson (sixth), Jack Outterside (13th) and George Dey (22nd). Bingley's Matthew Merrick showed good promise, finishing seventh.
