Joe Moses (Paul Milnes-Bradford Olympic RC) has received a triple boost.
The Keighley teenager won the final round of the National Trophy Cyclo-Cross Series last Sunday in Shrewsbury to take the overall junior men’s title and has also been chosen in the Great Britain team for the World Championships later this month.
The victory at Sundorne Sports Village made it three top-of-the-podium places for the 17-year-old in the six rounds.
Moses was one of five riders who tussled for much of the race, and he only won by around 15 seconds from Cycleshack rival Alex Welburn from Burton-on-Trent, who pipped him to the silver medal at the previous week’s National Championships.
Afterwards Moses said: “I came here to win and to get the series overall.
“Alex was a lot better than me on the technical sections but I found I could get a decent gap on him on the flatter, faster sections.
“On the penultimate lap, I managed to get a gap on him and he couldn’t get back.”
Bradley’s Ed McParland (GT Racing UK) was sixth at 1min 33sec and Mirfield’s Jake Womersley (Sportscover Altura RT) was seventh at 1min 40sec.
The National Series may have finished but Moses will still be busy.
He said: “I’m travelling out to Holland this weekend for the World Cup and then I’ve got the World Champs!”
Moses is one of three riders selected for Koksijde in Belgium on Saturday, January 28, the others being Welburn and national champion Hugo Robinson.
Hartshead’s Abby-Mae Parkinson (RST Racing Team-Trigon) gave an early indication that she can cope with wearing the multi-coloured national champion’s jersey.
The Bradford Grammar School pupil backed up her triumph the previous weekend at Ipswich by winning at Shrewsbury, and finished fourth overall.
Mirfield’s Loiuse Robinson (Stourbridge CC) won the women’s race and finished fourth overall, a place behind former Otley resident Adela Carter (WXC Mountain Bike team UK).
Birkenshaw’s Billy Harding (Paul Milnes RT-Bradford Olympic RC) was second in the under-16 male race, 37 seconds behind Jack Ravenscroft (Solihull CC), while Harding’s clubmate Sebastian Marsh was 24th at 6min 42sec.
Harding was fourth overall in the series, just seven points behind third-placed Daniel Fox (Solihull CC).
Meanwhile, Chris Young’s hopes of winning the veterans’ race in Shrewsbury ended when he fell on an off-camber section of the course.
Team Jewson’s Darren Atkins took the victory, holding off series winner Jim Bryan (Zepnat RT) by around 30 seconds.
With two laps to go, Atkins had 20 seconds over Bryan and Noel Clough (Wheelbase), while team-mate Young from Keighley was another ten seconds off the pace, and they held these positions to the end.
The result meant that Derbyshire’s Bryan took the series by 20 points from Atkins, while Clough held on to third spot by holding off Young, who was just four points behind and aiming to snatch the final podium spot away from his colleague.
Oxenhope’s Matt Denby (www.Zepnat.com) was eighth at 1min 44sec, Bradford’s Jonathan Watson (Charge Bikes) 12th at 2min 24sec and Chris’ brother Mike (Pedalsport CC) 20th at 3min 49sec.
Bingley’s Robert Watson was 23rd in the senior race and fifth under-23 man, finishing fourth in the overall under-23 standings.
