Defending champion Gareth Green (Lifeline Leisure) came through his Bradford Snooker Championship first-round match unscathed, with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Laisterdyke Cricket Club’s Lee Atkinson.

Green, together with brother Anthony, followed it up with a 3-2 victory in the Bradford Pairs.

They had to come from behind after Undercliffe Cricket Club duo Mick Hall and Phil Gaunt had put in an excellent performance to build up a 2-1 lead.

Bradford No 1 captain Kevin Firth (Undercliffe Cricket Club) was in top form, beating Windhill Cons’ Chris Metcalfe 4-0, which included the competition’s highest break to date of 103.

Trevor Wood, from Fairweather Green WMC, also had a convincing win, 4-1 against W Crompton (Harold Club), while Dave Stirk (Undercliffe Cricket) beat Paul Rawlings (Great Horton Cons) 4-0.

It was a successful round of matches for family-related pairs, as, along with the Green brothers, there were also wins for Gareth and Steve McCoy (Birkenshaw Libs), 3-1 against Terry McDonald and Sonny Sandhu (Undercliffe Cricket), Bob and George Doyle (Laisterdyke WMC), 3-2 over Birkenshaw Libs pair Simon Philips and Matt Ramsden, while C & J Buchan (Windhill Cons) defeated Martin Unsworth and Andy Briggs (Shipley Social Club) 3-2.

Also progressing to the next round were R John and Chris Hegarty (Windhill Cons), with a convincing 3-0 victory over P Barlow and C Brook (Baildon Woodbottom WMC).

Players in both the singles and pairs competitions have until December 3 to complete matches, with the draw for the next round expected to take place following this.
