Right On Cue
Oliver Mulcahy made it through to the latter stages of the under-14s event as some of Bradford’s brightest young talent took part in the English Junior Snooker Championship qualifiers.
Mulcahy finished second in his group after wins against James Pearson (2-1), Chris Golder (2-1) and Fraser Belton (3-0), with only a 2-1 defeat to George Kennedy denying him top spot.
Joe Lewyckyj was also in under-14s action and narrowly missed out on qualification, finishing third in his group.
He logged wins against Darion Cockrill (3-0) and Benjamon Poole (2-1) but 3-0 defeats to Michael Brindley and Jake Lucas ultimately cost a place in the last 16 next May.
In the under-16s section, Russell Morgan qualified for the initial play-offs by finishing second in the group stage.
Wins against Cockrill (3-0), Kennedy (3-1), Sean McAllister (3-0) and Jamie Cuthbert (3-2) put the youngster through to face Mackenzie Haigh of Dewsbury in the final qualifying match. But despite giving a good account of himself, he lost 3-0.
Mulcahy finished third in his group with two wins and two defeats, beating Matthew Rowney (3-2) and Liam Monaghan (3-1) with losses to Pearson (3-0) and Josh Mulholland (3-1). But he had done enough to get through the group stage.
In the play-off eliminator, Oldham opponent Aaron Davies proved too strong and won 3-0, while also firing the day’s highest break with a superb 101.
* Dean Parker of Laisterdyke WMC was a deserved 4-3 winner against Richard Bakes in the Bradford Snooker Championships.
Damian Gallager of the Harold Club also eased through to the next round with a 4-0 victory over Windhill Conservative opponent Craig Buchan.
Undercliffe Cricket Club duo Kevin Firth and Dave Stirk, the 2010 pairs winners, won 3-0 at Eccleshill WMC against Bob Aspinall and Mark Wilkinson.
Players have until December 3 to complete matches and forward results.
* Kevin Firth is playing in the second event of the English Masters Tour this weekend in Gateshead.
The England international lies fifth in the current rankings and will be looking to improve on his semi-final placing in the opening event.
* Hey’s Trophy second-leg matches take place tomorrow night, with Laisterdyke Cricket Club taking on East Bowling Unity B and Lifeline Leisure hosting Buttershaw Lane WMC.
Winning captains should forward result sheets to tournament director Eddie Ratcliffe by Monday.
