Bradford Snooker Championship holder Gareth Green retained his title with a dramatic comeback against eight-time winner Wayne Cooper in front of a good crowd at Eccleshill Victoria Conservative Club.
Both players struggled to hit top form early on, with Cooper (Laisterdyke Cricket Club) taking the opening frame 64-29.
A break of 39 helped Green (Lifeline Leisure) win the second 68-23 to draw level before Cooper went into the interval in front, thanks to a frame-winning 68-16.
Another low-scoring frame in the fourth saw the pair locked at 28-28 before Cooper took yellow to pink to seal the frame win and with it a 3-1 lead.
But Green then sparked into life and made breaks of 28 and 43 to win 79-10 and pull a frame back, and a comeback seemed possible.
Frame six was the best of the night and Cooper was to come within spitting distance of winning his ninth title, setting off with a break of 53, only to miss a relatively straightforward black off its spot when a big break seemed likely.
Green then showed that last season's Yorkshire and Bradford double was no fluke as he cleared with a break of 60 to win 61-53 and take the match to a deciding frame.
Green took early control in that and made a timely 27 break but Cooper pulled back and trailed by 18 with 22 on the table, but, following several exchanges of excellent safety, Green got a chance on the brown and cleared to win the match 4-3 and with it take his second title.
Cooper did make the competition's highest break, a superb 127 clearance against Howard Mawson in their semi-final.
On Sunday, Green continued his fine form by making the Yorkshire Snooker Championship Pairs final with partner Damian Wilks, but fell 3-0 to Leeds’ young stars Oliver Lines and Sanderson Lam.
Cooper, however, still has two further trophies in his sights, with his Yorkshire Snooker Championship final against Leeds’ David Grace on Friday, June 10 at the Northern Snooker Centre in Leeds.
But first up is a clash with partner Lee Atkinson, against defending Bradford Snooker Pairs champions Kevin Firth and Dave Stirk (Undercliffe Cricket Club) in the final at Great Horton Conservative Club next Wednesday (7.30pm).
In the Hey’s Trophy Snooker Team final, Upper Bolton Cons A won the trophy with a tense black-ball finish against Northcote Conservative Club at Undercliffe Cricket Club.
A full match report will appear in next week's column.
The first round of the Bradford Billiards Moorhouse Shield is set to get underway tomorrow night, with first-leg matches as follows: Eastbrook Hall v Gt Horton Cons, Queensbury Cons v Eccleshill WMC, Chapel Green Libs v Clayton Rugby B, Clayton Rugby A v Harold Club.
Second legs take place a week tomorrow.
