Bradford boxer Darren Tetley has set his sights on clinching a hat-trick of national titles on Saturday.

The 17-year-old is through to the junior ABAE finals in the 63.5kg division.

He will head for Rochester in Kent aiming to add the medal to the two novice ones he claimed at 60kg a year ago.

Tetley has boxed at both Karmand and Cleckheaton but now represents the Platinum Boxing Academy, who are based at Huggy’s Gym near the city centre.

He faces George Moughton from the Newham club in east London in the final.

Former pro Robert Nelson trains Tetley and is confident of another successful outcome.

Nelson said: “Darren is very strong at his weight. He’s got a good sponsor who has helped with the nutritional side of his diet and you can see a massive difference.

“Nutrition plays such a big factor and he is improving all the time. The kid he’s just beat (in the semi-finals) was really good but Darren boxed superbly.”

Another title would be a feather in the cap for former super-flyweight Nelson, who had 12 paid-for fights between 2005 and 2009.

He added: “I had to give up because you’re not allowed to coach amateurs and still box professionally.

“Trainers used to tell me that they got just as involved in fights as the boxers and I didn’t believe them. But it is true.

“I’m so desperate for Darren to do well and it’s really emotional.

“He’s got a good chance in the final now and it would be great if he could win again.”

But another Bradford club were fuming after their prospect missed out at the semi-final stage.

Blondie Price, of Karmand, was beaten 26-20 at 70kg by Rotunda’s Thomas Hart – a result that left coach Dave Cariss livid.

He said: “It’s the worst decision I’ve seen in 25 years. The poor lad was crying afterwards.

“He was 10-3 up from the first round and still ahead 14-11 after two. I don’t know how they scored it as they did.

“You get somebody to a championships and then they lose like that. It’s very hard to take. Luckily, he’s a cracking lad and his discipline is fantastic. He’s already asked me to get him another bout.”
