Dewsbury Sedbergh added the Burton Cup to their Bradford Table Tennis League Division One title following a 5-2 success against Dewsbury Tog in a highly entertaining final.
John Stones won his opening two singles for Sedbergh, blocking and hitting superbly against Steve Kosmowsky and Steve Crosby. Mark Land was also in impressive form as he beat Paul Bell and Kosmowsky without dropping a game.
Tog replied as Crosby and Bell defeated Steve Morris but they were 4-2 down when Crosby faced Land.
Crosby served and attacked relentlessly and won the first two games but Land hit back to take the third game 12-10. Crosby led 10-7 in game four and 10-6 in the decider but Land would not be denied as he saved nine match points to triumph 14-12 and seal the double.
There was also an exciting finish in the Tony Theobould trophy final as Highdale C from Division Two faced Fastbats X from Division Four.
Fastbats began with a 183-point start but Highdale came out all guns blazing, with Gabina Lyons conceding just 36 points in his first two sets and, after five sets, Highdale had recovered 126 points.
Fastbats needed to stem the tide and Rod Hillam and Peter Eccles both took games off Mick Kosmowsky and, with one set left, Fastbats had a 15-point lead with Hillam facing Geoff Barnes.
Hillam lost the first two games 11-3 and 11-8 and the tie was in Highdale’s hands but Hillam scored ten points in game three and then won the last game 11-9 to see Fastbats home by five points.
