Pudsey became West Riding Cup champions for the second time in three years after beating Crossgates by 13 points in the final.

Pudsey started the evening brightly with Tom Hanson playing to his usual high standard and winning to 14 against Tony Green.

This was followed by equally impressive victories for Darren Crawley (21-12) and Ian Shaw (21-15) to put Pudsey in the driving seat. Crossgates replied with a 21-18 win from James Wilcox and, after four jacks, Pudsey led 81-62.

The middle order was also tightly contested and Crossgates edged their way back in the game with superb displays from Pete Wilcox (21-12) and Terry Kelly (21-17), reducing the margin to just six points.

Crossgates’ Mark Hughes won his game to 15 and tied the overall scores.

Completing the middle four was Chris Hatton, who held his nerve to edge home 21-15 and restore Pudsey’s lead to six, 146-140.

First out of the blocks in the final four games was Pudsey skipper Jon Edmondson, who put in a man-of-the-match performance, winning 21-5.

Dave Hilliam gave the Pudsey fans plenty to cheer as he came through a difficult game 21-16 against Mark Taylor.

Jon Wilcox beat Pudsey’s Andy Hodgson 21-20 in a see-saw encounter, but Hodgson’s display ensured Pudsey had earned enough points for victory.

Last man Paul Cousins lost 21-8 to Nigel Cranston, who levelled it up at six winners apiece.

Pudsey first won the West Riding Cup in 2009 and it was the first major piece of silverware the club had won.

Both 2009 and 2010 were wonderful years for the club, culminating in victory in the Yorkshire Cup in the club’s centenary year.

After winning the Yorkshire Parks Victory Trophy earlier this month, Pudsey now have two trophies in the cabinet.

Bradford take on Leeds in the opening fixture of the Vets Inter District League, with the home match at Ladyhill Park and the away match at Scatcherd Park, on Friday, May 6 with a 1.30pm start.
