Otley’s Lizzie Armitstead is to be presented with a top award in recognition of her achievements in international road and track cycling.
The Great Britain rider will collect the CA Rhodes Memorial for 2010, which is regarded as the greatest distinction Yorkshire cycling can bestow.
It was instigated in 1961 as a tribute to the memory of Charles Arthur Rhodes (1895-1961), doyen of the Yorkshire Road Club, co-founder in 1932 of the Yorkshire Cycling Federation and a nationally recognised timekeeper and administrator.
Armitstead, 22, is a rising star in British cycling, having first come to prominence with a silver medal in the scratch race at the Junior World Track Championships on 2005.
She continued her success on both track and road and in 2008 became the under-23 scratch race champion and was a member of the winning team pursuit at the European Championships.
She completed a full house at the World Championships in 2009 with gold in the team pursuit, silver in the scratch race and bronze in the points race. She collected two more World Track Championship silver medals last year. On the road, Armitstead turned professional in 2009 for Lotto-Belisol, before moving to Cervelo in 2010.
Her success continued with numerous stage wins in Europe and first place in the Under-23 National Road Race Championships in both 2009 and 2010.
She completed her 2010 season by winning the road race silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
