Darren Tetley has blasted his way to a national boxing title.
The 16-year-old, from the Cleckheaton Boxing Academy, claimed the class B 60kg title in crushing fashion in the CYP UK finals at London Docklands.
Tetley proved a class above opponent Joe Pigford from Southampton’s Golden Ring club to take the bout on a convincing 17-3 decision.
Both boxers took standing counts but Tetley was always in charge after opening up a 5-1 lead in the opening round.
Pigford took a count after being caught by a well-timed left cross and found himself a distant 12-2 behind after two.
He launched a desperate rally in the final round, enjoying brief success of his own, before Tetley confirmed his superiority once again with another late flurry.
Trainer Keith Tate said: “It was a good scrap and to win a championship by that margin is a great achievement. I don’t think there was another one like that in the whole night.
“Darren boxed very well and I’m really pleased for him. He’s worked really hard for this.” Sixteen-year-old Amy MacLean hopes to earn more success for Cleckheaton in the Yorkshire women’s finals at Havercroft.
