Tom Moses proved just what a talented prospect he is when he won the first round of the National Junior Road Race Series in Wales.

The 17-year-old Oakworth rider crossed the line alone at the end of the 68-mile Cadence Junior Road Race in Abergavenny, having sprinted clear of his breakaway rivals in the closing stages.

Riding for Glendene CC after switching teams in the winter, Moses won after attacking off the front of the bunch with two kilometres to go.

He crossed the line with five seconds to spare over his nearest rival, Lancashire’s Lewis Balyckyi (Team Wallis CHH), while Adam Yates (Maxgear RT) was third.

Moses said: “I didn’t expect that. It was a really hard race where you had to be in the right place at the right time.

“Midway through the race, I thought I was working too hard, but in the end I think it paid off as I felt really strong.

“I expected to be strong on the climbs as my training has been going well. On the run-in to the finish there was a group of us and at that point I didn’t feel too strong.

“So I waited and then I saw Sam Harrison on the front. I knew that he was a strong rider and Adam Yates was up there with him as well, so I know that was a good move to go with.

“Once Lewis Balyckyi came across to join us, we then hit a really steep climb and I went hard up that and this was when Harrison was dropped.

“That left me, Adam and Lewis. I felt I was the strongest in the group so I pushed on with an attack and managed to stay about 20 metres in front of the others all the way to the finish.”
