Right on Cue
Ilyas Khan continued his title defence with another impressive performance to reach the BRADFORD SNOOKER CHAMPIONSHIP quarter-finals.
In-form Khan brushed aside Cuedos Snooker Club colleague Andy Papayakova 4-0, which included a break of 90.
The clash of the round saw Manningham Ward’s Gareth Green reach the last eight with a 4-2 victory over 2004 champion Howard Mawson of Q-Tips Shipley, while John Wellham of Girlington Cons beat Shipley Club opponent Mick Sharp 4-0.
The draws for both the singles and pairs competitions are to be made this week and details will be sent out at the earliest opportunity.
Bradford’s two YORKSHIRE INTER-DISTRICT SNOOKER LEAGUE sides enjoyed an unbeaten weekend in their latest Division One games.
The No 2 team took pride of place with a superb 6-0 victory at Castleford No 1, Gareth Green kicking off by winning both his frames comfortably against Joe Roberts.
Damian Wilks continued the run, making a break of 40 to seal his second frame against Daniel Womersley.
Boover Singh then edged a close first frame against John Arnold, winning on the pink, but won the final frame easily as the side gained a much-needed boost.
Meanwhile, Bradford No 1 earned a well-deserved 3-3 draw against highly-fancied Sheffield No 2, although the result could easily have been more favourable for the local side.
Dave Stirk started well, winning 70-39 against Paul Bannister, and followed up by racing into a good lead in his second frame before his opponent cleared the last red down to the black to win 63-41.
Wayne Cooper made a 37 break to beat Wayne Wootton 76-15 but misfired in his second as the Sheffield player won 59-30.
Kevin Firth was in top form and knocked in a 44 break to beat highly-rated youngster Mitchell Travis 68-33.
Travis then made a 33 break to lead by 39 points in the final frame and although Firth replied with a 35, several misses let in the Sheffield man and he laid an excellent snooker to gain a free ball and a clearance of the colours meant a share of the spoils.
League standings: Leeds 25pts (played 6), Bradford 1 25 (9), Sheffield 2 24 (7), Sheffield 1 22 (6), Castleford 1 21 (9), Bradford 2 19 (6), Castleford 2 14 (7).
