Podium places were hard to come by for City of Bradford at this year’s Yorkshire Senior/Junior Championships held at the John Charles Centre for Sport in Leeds.

But Sian Morgan continued her preparation for possible Commonwealth Games selection with some fine swims.

Freestyle specialist Morgan clinched first junior and second senior position in the 50m event in a new British Championship qualifying and personal best time of 27.68sec.

She then went on to win the 200m junior title with a time of 2min 5.74secs. That also gave her third-place senior and a British Championship qualifying time.

The longer 1,500m event saw her finish in time of 17-17.14. The swim gave her new national youth qualifying times at the 800m mark and also in the 1,500m at the finish line.

Her 800m result also added to her collection of British Championships qualifying times and the overall result gave her second-place senior and junior.

Fresh from his success at the recent Burns Meet, 16-year-old David Brown captured the limelight when he topped the podium in the senior 50m breaststroke in a new national youth qualifying time and personal best of 30.75 His time of 1-10.44 also put him through to the championships later this year and earned him a fourth-place finish.

Sam O’Donohoe claimed two personal best times in the 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke to secure third and second places in the juniors respectively.

Fourteen-year-old Nicole Fordham swam three personal best times in her age group at 50m and 200m freestyle and 50m butterfly.

Hannah Midgley and Joanna Gledhill were City’s only other finalists, with Midgley coming tenth in the senior 400m individual medley and Gledhill fifth in the junior 100m backstroke and ninth in the equivalent senior event.
