Bradford’s Kevin Firth came through a very hectic weekend with qualification in two major snooker events.

On Saturday at Cue Gardens at Odsal Top, Firth competed in the regional qualifiers of the English Snooker Seniors' Championship, where a round- robin format was played to determine qualification.

Firth played five matches on the day and made it through to the national last 16, due to be played next month. He also made the day’s highest break - a superb 123.

The following day it was the qualifiers for the Yorkshire Snooker Championships at the Northern Snooker Centre in Leeds.

Firth won his first three matches 3-0 - against Keith Hartley, Paul Laughton and Matthew Samples - and faced 2009 semi-finalist Shaun Parkes from Mexborough for a place in the quarter-finals.

The match was keenly contested and Firth edged it 3-2 and now looks forward to the last eight next month.

To round off a busy period for the Bradford player, Firth then helped his team-mates to victory on Sunday night at Undercliffe Cricket Club in the Yorkshire Inter-District League, where Bradford No 1 defeated Castleford No 1 4-2.

Home club player Dave Stirk played a solid all-round match to win both frames against youngster Joe Roberts 64-50, 69-5, the latter including a 32 break.

Wayne Cooper, playing only his second match of the season, lost his first frame 71-37 when opponent John Arnold ground out an excellent clearance to pull one back for Castleford, but Cooper composed himself well and made a break of 48 to win the next 71-15.

A jaded Firth then looked to have given Bradford a 4-1 lead, but young Daniel Womersley made a superb clearance under pressure to steal the frame 51-41. Firth then found an extra gear in the final frame, making a 52 break to win 70-55.

In billiards, Bradford No 2 maintained their position at the summit with a good 5-2 victory at Huddersfield No 2.

Richard Bowes gave the side an excellent start by beating Frank Griffin 200-55, after which captain Richard Lodge defeated Jez Ford by 200-147. Home captain John Ingleby salvaged something for Huddersfield when he beat Paul Devitt by 200-102. Bradford No 1 had another miserable night, losing 7-0, Steve Wilman, Nigel Stebbings and Jason Devanney being well beaten by Brian Hardcastle, Steve Hardcastle and Tim Gudolphin respectively at Harrogate.

The first legs of the Flexprint Services-Hey's Trophy quarter-finals and the Hopkinson Plate last 16 get underway a week tomorrow. Details have been sent out to all clubs by tournament director Eddie Ratcliffe (07790-379832).
