Chris Mordue of Brighouse Sports won the Britannia Developments-sponsored WEDNESDAY MERIT after beating Wibsey’s Philip Walker 21-16 in the final.
It was the fourth time Mordue, the current Waterloo champion, has lifted the trophy, having previously been successful in 1994, 1995 and 2003.
A total of 72 entries braved the weather conditions at Peel Park and there were plenty of shocks.
Young Pudsey bowler Connor Davis ousted 2005 champion Tony Riley (Brighouse Sports) 21-19 in the first round, while Scott Sansom (Asa Briggs) defeated 1998 and 2004 champion Jon Edmondson (Brighouse Sports) 21-15 in the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, Mordue was easing his way through to the final with wins over Nino Esposito (Lister) 21-11, Andrew Howie (Eccleshill) 21-15 and Sansom (Asa Briggs) 21-13. Walker was also in terrific form, beating Mick Angus (Eccleshill) 21-13, 2007 Bradford Merit champion Glen McCafferty (Asa Briggs) 21-15 and Peter Wilson (Greengates) 21-18, before missing out on the title to Mordue.
