Dougie Lampkin got off to a bad start in his debut ride on the new Beta two-stroke in the opening round of the FIM World Indoor Trials Championship.
The Silsden rider posted a poor opening lap with four maximum penalties in seven sections at the Palais des Sports in Marseille.
That score dropped him to seventh and out of the final.
Cookridge's James Dabill came sixth in his first event as an official contender.
Some mistakes crept in and time penalties served to keep him down the order but to finish just a mark behind seasoned world contender Jeroni Fajardo was a remarkable result.
Spaniard Toni Bou won the event ahead of compatriots Albert Cabestany and Adam Raga.
