Third place in the final round was enough for Bingley's Rob Jebb to snatch second overall in the prestigious National Trophy Cyclo-Cross Series.

Jebb, who was selected to ride for Great Britain at the World Championships after finishing seventh in the previous weekend's National Championships in Birmingham, crossed the line 1min 12sec behind winner Ian Bibby (Science in Sport).

But with previous series leader and Bibby's team-mate Dave Collins having a nightmare day and finishing only 11th, Jebb clawed his way up to second by just two points.

Lancashire's Paul Oldham finished just ten seconds behind Bibby in the final round at Derby College and gained enough points to take the overall series win by ten points from Jebb.

Jebb said: "It was a good ride. My aim was just to do the best I could. I wasn't particularly thinking about where I could finish overall but it's good to have got second spot.

"It was quite a muddy day but I got a reasonable start and I was third after the first lap and held it to the finish.

"It's boosted my confidence ahead of the Worlds in Italy in a couple of weeks. A medal is out of the question but I'll be aiming to stay on the same lap as the winner. I managed to do that last year, so it'd be good to improve a little."

Burley in Wharfedale's Mark Thwaites was 13th - and fourth in the under-23 category - at Derby, leaving him tenth in the final overall tally and second best at under-23 level.

In other categories, Keighley's Chris Young, the former British senior champion riding for JD Cycles of Ilkley, was fourth on the day to finish third in the final table behind Geoff Giddings and Northallerton's Noel Clough.

Second place at Derby from Keighley's Tom Moses (SSC Cyclesport) also gave him second overall, while JD Cycles rider Paul Young, also from Keighley, was fifth to finish fourth overall.
