Keighley ace Chris Young will defend his veteran title when the National Cyclo-Cross Championships are staged in Birmingham this weekend.

Young, the former British Senior Champion, has finished first, second and third in the veteran category over the last three years and is in no mood to concede the crown without a fight.

But the 40-49 category looks set to be one of the most competitive, with Yorkshire rival Noel Clough from Northallerton in top form ahead of the title race.

"There are some good riders out there and if you can't beat them, then so be it," said Young.

"But I'll be going all out to retain the title.

"A lot will depend on the conditions because if there's a lot of rain between now and then, it could make all the difference. But whatever happens, I'll be out to keep my title."

Elsewhere in the championships, Burley-in-Wharfedale's Scott Thwaites (Crosstrax) will be aiming to put one over defending champion Alex Paton in the junior men's event.

With both riders showing good form lately, a tough race is in prospect.

In the under-23 category, Scott's older brother Mark will be going for glory.

Bingley's Rob Jebb (Wheelbase) will be aiming for a podium finish in the senior men's section once again, while Keighley youngsters Tom Moses and Paul Young will be hoping for a good result in the youth race.
