Kyle Brassington's singles journey in the $15,000 Men's Futures tournament at Ilkley came to an end today.
The 20-year-old home club member, who had come through three rounds of qualifying and won his first-round match in the main draw, was beaten 7-5, 6-4 by seventh seed Tom Rushby from Derbyshire.
"It all came down to a few points," said Brassington of his bid to reach the quarter-finals.
"I had a bad line call on one of his first service games, which would have given me break point, but I broke him once in each set so if I had held my serve I would have won the match."
Brassington, who won't have a world ranking until next Monday, certainly wasn't fazed at facing the world No 572.
He said: "I don't think his world ranking is proof of how good he is - maybe he has had a few lucky tournaments.
"I was on top of his serve quite a few times but it was just a matter of holding on to my own serve.
"However, he has a good return and it was just a question of mixing up my own serve - either sliding it out wide or banging it down the T'."
Reflecting on his week as a whole, the ambitious youngster said: "It has been good but it would have been nice to have got to the quarters."
Now the Ilkley member, who is reliant on his prize-money, a part-time job and his parents for his finance, moves on to the qualifiers at Wrexham on Sunday before playing two tournaments in London as he tries to move up the world rankings.
Brassington explained: "I have no sponsor but my uncle owns a pub in Pangbourne near Reading. It's close to where I train so I pull a few pints sometimes at weekends."
Rushby, a 21-year-old from Derby, reached the Ilkley quarter-finals last year and said: "I had to beat Kyle to defend all my points. It was a tough match and Kyle played well but at least I got a break up in both sets."
In the Tropicana British Tour, Ilkley's Steven Hunt was beaten 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 by William Allen but Stourton Road clubmate Andrew Denny defeated David Trainor 6-2, 7-5.
