LADYHILL’S Mally Fowler proved a popular winner of the sixth Spen Winter Sweep, defeating Danny Sillitoe (Ossett Flying Horse) 21-14 in the final.
Losing semi-finalists were Danny Teale (Guiseley), 21-8 to Sillitoe, and Marc Armitage (Littlemoor), winner of Spen’s first week, 21-15 to Fowler.
It was Sillitoe’s first visit to Spen this winter and, in a record field of 40 in milder weather, he led Teale 16-2 before the youngster pulled back five points.
In the other semi-final, Fowler went 6-0 up, only for Armitage to score four straight points, and there was never much between them until Fowler scored another four straight points from 12-11.
Fowler, one of the most respected competitors at Spen, went into a 4-0 lead in the final, but only led 7-5 after nine ends.
However, the Ladyhill man then found form and stretched his advantage to to 11-5, 17-6 and 20-8.
Suddenly Sillitoe found form and scored six points in five ends, but Fowler then got the one that he needed to end his long winter drought.
