Otley's Lizzie Armitstead confirmed her status as one of the country's best young prospects in a range of disciplines by turning in a good performance in the National Team Time Trial Championships over a 50-kilometre course in Wales.

Armitstead, the national criterium champion for the last two years, teamed up with Global Racing colleagues Katie Curtis and Nikki Harris in the Glynneath event and they were the third fastest women's team against some formidable opposition.

The trio finished 30th out of all the teams entered, going faster than 20 of the men's line-ups.

Armitstead is now preparing for next week's European Track Championships in Germany, where she rides the points race and the scratch race, and later this month she will take part in the European Under-23s Road Race Championship in Bulgaria.

  • The Otley Cycling Club 50-mile time trial at Boroughbridge had to be shortened to 25 miles because of dangerous levels of spray on the intended course on the A1.
  • Huddersfield's Carl Saint was second behind midlands visitor Oliver Jones and also led Yorkshire Road Club to the team prize with Mark Johnson and Ian Fairweather.
