Clayton's Paul Gill was the winner of the Britannia Developments-sponsored Wednesday Merit, beating Brighouse's Jon Edmondson 21-20 in the final.

The standard of bowls throughout the day was excellent and lots of close games kept the crowd entertained.

Gill had three 21-20 victories on his way to the title, trailing Angela Carter 19-11 in the semi-final before scraping home 21-20.

Edmondson had been looking for his third Wednesday Merit title.

A good crowd had stayed to watch the final, with both finalists constantly trying their luck in the corners.

The prizes were presented by Mr David Cooper, of Britannia Developments.

  • Clayton remain unbeaten in the Naylor Premier League after a 21-9 home win over struggling Eccleshill B.

Graham Reay's superb 21-1 victory led the hosts on their way and was ably assisted by Paul Gill and Phil Lister, who both carded 21-8 wins.

Brighouse Sports A are on a roll at the moment, as they defeated Spen Victoria A 27-3, and opened up a 22-point lead at the top of the table. Jon Edmondson (21-3), Chris Mordue (21-6), Mark Regan (21-9) and Hedley Kettlewell (21-9) were the best of eight home winners.

Pudsey carded all ten winners in a 28-2 demolition of Ladyhill A.

Wyke A moved level on points with Heckmondwike after a 21-9 victory in the Godwin League, thanks to a great 21-7 victory for Neil Tordoff.

Rufford A edged home 16-14 over local rivals Guiseley A, with Ryan Benson's 21-7 making the difference for the hosts.

Low Moor Harold are still looking for their first victory of the season as they went down 18-12 at home to Crowghyll A in the Observer League.

Brian Hemingway (21-3) and Joe Mellor (21-8) starred for Low Moor but seven away winners ensured a Crowghyll victory.

Keith Goodall (21-6) returned to the Peel A team and helped them to a narrow 16-14 win over Pudsey B while Tyersal A moved joint third with a 17-13 win over Wibsey A, thanks to Wendy Shimbles' 21-7.

Gordon Jacobs produced a great 21-7 for Oakenshaw A but saw his side go down 16-14 at home to Eccleshill C in the Bartle League.

Norman Wilkinson (21-7), Ken Watkin (21-8) and Len Robinson (21-9) helped Bramley Libs B to a 22-8 win at Bowling A, who find themselves in free-fall.

Maurice Warren (21-7) and Don Sturgeon (21-8) ensured a 17-13 home win for Stanningley over Lister A, while West and Clayton B shared the points as Ken Crossley (21-3) starred for Clayton and Pauline Wilkinson (21-0) was on top form for West.

Barry Durrans produced a great 21-5 for Bradford Moor A but the hosts could only muster two winners, as BBA left with an impressive 19-11 victory in the Haigh League.

Derek Edon (21-7) and Andy Matthews (21-9) helped Salts to a 17-13 win over Pudsey C and away from the bottom of the table.

Asa Briggs B extended their lead at the top of the table with a 23-7 win over basement club Rufford B, as the Southwells' starred, Andy winning 21-3 and son Ashley winning 21-9.

Brackenhill's 22-8 home win over Horsforth Woodside B moved them to the top of the Riley League table, thanks to David Pearson (21-3), Andy Morton (21-4), Tony Cockcroft (21-6) and Maureen Wainwright (21-8), despite Brenda Chaffer's 21-3 for Woodside.

Michael Sansome (21-2) was the pick of seven home winners as Wibsey B beat West Royd 21-9.

Dale Dyson produced a great 21-6 win for Bailiff Bridge but found himself on the losing side as six away winners ensured a 16-14 away win for Knowles B in the Field Packaging League.

Lister B moved above Horton B after beating them 22-8, with Joan Seaton (21-9) on top form.

Asa Briggs C remain top of the table after beating Bowling B 24-6, with Brian Powe (21-3) the pick of eight home winners.

Roger Garnett (21-9) helped Guiseley C edge home 17-13 over Peel C. Shirley Wood replied with a 21-8 victory for Peel.

Queensbury C are rooted to the bottom of the table after losing 24-6 at home to Tyersal B. Saville Kershaw's 21-8 was the only highlight for the hosts. William Conroy (21-4) and Cyril Simpson (21-5) ensured a large away victory.

Steve Wright (21-4) was the best of eight home winners as Shipley Club defeated West Bradford B 23-7 in the Mellor League.

Gordon Robinson's 21-4 and Ken Briggs' 21-5 was in vain for Horton C, as Joan Leppla (21-2), Jack Thorpe (21-6) and Daryl Fieldhouse (21-9) led Wibsey D to a narrow 16-14 home win.

Guiseley C played ten ladies in their 19-11 home victory over Brackenhill B, with Ann Pickersgill (21-8) and Lynette Hall (21-9) the best of the winners.
