SKIPTON AA
The warm, settled weather gave way to colder conditions and frequent spells of rain, which culminated in over 25mm (one inch) falling last Friday and overnight, resulting in the River Aire overflowing its banks by Saturday morning.
Besides putting the Aire out of action for angling, the flood could not have come at a worse time for the river's coarse fish, most of which would have completed this year's spawning, with the result that most of the eggs and any already hatched fry will probably have been washed away downstream or into the fields.
Other river inhabitants, such as sand martins, kingfishers, ducks, moor hens and swans, will have seen their nests suffer a similar fate, although – unlike the fish – there is still time for other clutches of eggs, weather permitting.
Craven Summer League, match two result: 1 Ernest Ramsbotham 920g (2:0:4 bream), 2 Robert Thornton 700g (1:9:8) bream plus few small fish, 3 Keith Brown took third spot 650g (1:7:0) bream, 4 Gary Whitaker 510g (1:2:0) small roach and perch. Match three: Sunday, May 31 at Swine Lane, Riddlesden.

Tickets are still available from Simon (01274-571175) for Sunday's members' match at Beaver Bridge on the Aire and Calder Canal, drawing on the towpath at 9.15am. Places are also still available from Simon for the veterans' match at Raskelf on Sunday, June 14. Members can now get a ten per cent discount on all Xcel bait purchases which are not subject to free postage by stating their membership number when ordering. This bait has been producing good catches on a number of the club's waters recently. The River Calder at Elland is fishing very well for trout on fly, while Queen Mary's Ponds are producing good catches of tench, bream and carp. Members are reminded that all gates should be closed and that a code is required from the Southern Region head bailiff for the main gate at Knotford.

We also have another trip to Westport in Ireland in July, which is also full, so it looks like we could have a bumper year of fishing.
