Raskelf will be closed on Sunday for the final round of this year's Winter Series, which draws at the Golden Lion at 9am. Andy Jacques leads the series with 89 points, followed by Fred Prudham (84) and Steve Hodson (74). The code for the gate at Knotford has had to be changed due to vandalism. The new code can be obtained by ringing the head bailiff for the southern region, whose number is in the yearbook. Anybody found to be vandalising any club property will be banned from the club and may face legal action. Thank you to all who attended the working party at Raskelf, clearing a large amount of branches and improving access on a number of pegs. The trout season on rivers opens next Wednesday, and members are reminded that bait restrictions are in place until the coarse season opens on Tuesday, June 16, as per Environment Agency laws.

Our presentation evening was well attended, and the results were: Yewco Trophy: 1 Dave Kitchingman 75pts; 2 Chris Foord 53, 3 Paul Lonsdale 23. Kitchingman also won the Clayton Tray, Bob Lawson Cup, The Species Trophy, The Aggregate Weight Trophy and was voted Clubman of the Year. John Wilcock won the International Shield, The Forward Trophy and The Park Trophy. Paul Lonsdale won the Carter Cup, Ralph Jones the Hill Trophy and Brian Clarkson the Ken Boyes Trophy for the biggest fish of the year – a magnificent tope of 60lb, a personal best which smashed the club record by 15lb. He also won the Harry Kitchingman Shield for catching the heaviest fish in Ireland – another Tope of 47lb. Not bad for a 71-year-old!

Next Wednesday, the brown trout season will commence on all our waters. This season is the first for some time when the restocking programme has not been finalised due to new 2015 rules, especially on rivers and tributaries. They banned the introduction of diploid trout – effectively a fish-farmed brownie capable of breeding but having a gene structure of only 75 per cent of that of a natural wild fish. Diploids may still be stocked in land-locked waters. Their easily obtained replacement for rivers is the triploid brown trout, which is incapable of breeding following subjecting the eggs to very high pressure before going on to hatch.

Volunteers for Saturday's working party at Pilley's should meet on the bank at 9.30am. Note: No carp to be taken over the bank or grass. There is no fishing now on rivers until the start of the trout season on March 25, when the only permitted baits are worm, fly, minnow and artificials. No meat or cereal bait allowed and no keep-nets until June 16. The present Environment Agency licence expires on March 31 and must be renewed before fishing after that date. This can be done online or at any post office. There are concessions for senior citizens, the disabled and juniors.

This Sunday's match, which is full, is in the Ghost Lake at Brafferton. We have the whole lake, so you will probably need your trolleys. The café will be open at 7.30am and the draw is at 9am. This match is also the first round of the Knockout Cup.
