The Bradford Snooker Championship final takes place on Saturday at Great Horton Conservative Club (7.45pm), with Allerton Cons’ John Wellham taking on Anthony Green from the Harold Club.
Anthony’s brother Gareth has dominated the Bradford Championships for the past four seasons, beating Wellham in last years’ final, but Wellham gained revenge in round two this season to knock out the four-time champion and is hoping to add his name to the famous trophy for the first time.
In contrast, this is Green’s first season playing in the Championships and, despite having won the Bradford Pairs with his brother twice in the last two years, he has never entered the singles before.
Eyebrows were certainly raised when Green knocked out eight-time Bradford champion Wayne Cooper, but this was a deserved victory against one of the best players Bradford has ever produced.
Wellham has beaten Paul Young 4-2, Gareth Green 4-2, Wayne Downey 4-0 and Kevin Firth 4-3 on the way to the final, while Green has progressed thanks to victories over Wayne Cooper 4-1, Richard Bakes 4-1, Chris Tolson 4-0 and Howard Mawson 4-3.
Saturday’s showdown promises to be an intriguing match and it is hoped another packed house will be there to see a new champion lift the trophy.
Mark Hirst is bidding to add another billiards title to his collection as he takes on Paul Devitt in the Final of the Bradford Billiards Championship next Wednesday at Clayton Liberal Club (7.45pm).
The match will be two sessions of one hour, with a 15-minute interval. Spectators are welcome at the club on John Street in Clayton Village.
The Bradford Snooker Pairs Final takes place a week on Saturday at Eccleshill Victoria Conservative Club (7pm) with Wayne Cooper and Kevin Firth (Undercliffe Cricket) taking on Mark Slater and Jason Murgatroyd (Clayton Libs).
Upper Bolton Cons A play Windhill Cons B next Thursday in the final of the Heys Trophy at East Ward (7.30pm), while the following Thursday the Hopkinson Plate Final will be played at Undercliffe CC between East Ward and Clayton Rugby A.
