Ashley Vanzie won’t forget his boxing double-header weekend in a hurry.
The Bradford light-heavyweight claimed two wins in consecutive days – but was left dazed by the experience.
First up was the heavier Dan Aziz in the British Universities' Championships in Sheffield.
Despite conceding 5kg to his opponent, Vanzie came through a cagy start to dominate the second and third rounds and earn the unanimous vote from the judges.
Not going into the ring until 11pm, he got only four hours' sleep before starting the preparations for the home show at his Dewsbury club the following night.
A check weigh-in the next morning showed he was over the limit agreed by his opponent, so he had to frantically shed the pounds in the build-up.
That naturally sapped his sharpness and power in a fast-paced contest but Vanzie weathered a late storm to hang on for a second victory.
He admitted: “I felt exhausted. The combination of losing the weight too quickly, not sleeping enough and boxing two consecutive days took its toll.
“It was an experiment and taught me a lot. Some invaluable lessons were learned.”
