A satellite club, which is linked to the well-established Onna Ju-Jitsu Club, has been set up at Bradford’s Zara Sports Centre.

Formed in November, the new club is the first to be funded by West Yorkshire Sport as part of Sport England’s new satellite club intervention.

Clubs like this will help Sport England provide more opportunities for young people to get active.

The club has been a huge hit with pupils at Belle Vue Girls’ School, with over 25 Asians aged from 11 to 16 attending every Monday (3pm-4.30pm), aiming to get their white belts in March!

Sensei Mumtaz Khan said: “My aim is for these girls to leave school with their black belts and become qualified leaders in ju-jitsu.”

Onna Ju-Jitsu Club strives to support as many young people as possible who are interested in becoming coaches, providing qualifications and development opportunities as well as life skills.

Young leaders Saima Khan and Zoya Qureshi said: “The club has given us a definite increase in confidence and our ambition is to become sensei (leaders).”

Mumtaz founded Onna Ju-Jitsu Club in 2000, and the club now has over 400 students.

A club has also been set up at Feversham College and one is also planned at St Bede’s Catholic Grammar School.
