Bradford motor cycle racer David Brook finished his Motodex Pre-National 600 campaign with a victory at Mallory Park - and a crash after riding over a two-foot oil slick.

With the venue going into administration not long after the meeting, the action was concertinaed into one day, with qualifying and two races.

The Clayton Heights man came second in qualifying, 0.4sec behind pole-sitter and championship leader James Shaw but ahead of third-placed Mallory Park specialist Paul Westerdale.

After tinkering to improve his race starts, which had been an Achilles heel, Brook was ahead in the first corner and led for six of the eight laps before Shaw passed him on lap seven.

Still confident, however, the Bradford man went for a banzai move on the last lap at Gerrards, not knowing that a rider had blown an engine on the previous lap there.

Brook could see that two riders were already in the gravel trap and a backmarker then high-sided his bike just two lengths ahead of him, causing Brook to take evasive action but putting him into the oil.

Fortunately both man and machine were okay after the crash, despite it being the fastest corner on the track.

Shaw, already secure in first place, opted out of the second race, and Brook, after another great start, led from ‘gun to tape’ to finish 1.7sec ahead of Westerdale and secure the runners-up berth.

In 2014, Brook, who thanks his family and all his sponsors, will tackle the Superstock 1000 Championship with Thundersport GB, plus select rounds of the British Superbike Championship aboard a Kawasaki ZX10R.
