Already living the dream, Team Sky’s Josh Edmondson hopes his fantasy features a Tour de France debut in his home county in 2014.
The 20-year-old from Pool-in-Wharfedale is in his first year with Team Sky but has already impressed and is targeting a Grand Tour appearance in his first two seasons.
What could be better than the 101st Tour, which begins in Leeds next July and features stages from Leeds to Harrogate and York to Sheffield – with Keighley, Ilkley, Otley, Haworth and Skipton seeing the world’s best cyclists racing through their streets.
“That would be an absolute dream,” said Edmondson.
“I can’t imagine anything better than starting the Tour in Yorkshire. It would be incredible. That’s definitely an aim, although it would be a hard aim to fulfil.”
Indeed, particularly at a Team Sky squad dominating stage racing this term.
Sir Bradley Wiggins’ Tour win – the first by a Briton – appears to have been just the start for the British squad run by Sir Dave Brailsford, the British Cycling performance director.
This season Team Sky have blazed a trail once again, with 2012 Tour runner-up Chris Froome first at the Tour of Oman, Criter-ium International and Tour de Romandie, while, only last week, Rigoberto Urán sealed a superb second place in the Giro d’Italia and Geraint Thomas second at Bayern Rundfahrt.
Edmondson rode alongside Wiggins in the Tour of Catalunya, which was an experience for the younger man.
“It’s mainly just watching how he prepares mentally and gets himself ready for every race, how he likes to have the team around him and things,” said Edmondson.
Edmondson appears to be a quick learner.
He spent two years in Italy with the prestigious Colpack team before impressing at last September’s Tour of Britain in GB colours.
“As a young rider with the national team it was just amazing to ride that race in your national colours,” he said. “It was always going to be an opportunity.”
It was a chance he seized and since meeting his Team Sky colleagues in November, Edmondson has flourished.
He was in a breakaway on his World Tour debut in Catalunya, raced in the Tour de Romandie, the Amstel Gold Race and Fleche Wallonne in April and May and was part of an eight-string Sky team at the Tour of Norway earlier this month.
“For this first year I’ve just got to try to learn as much as I can,” added Edmondson.
“At every race I’m learning how they like to race, when somebody different is leading the team how that affects the race and what my role will be in the team.”
Predominantly a climber, Edmondson will work on his all-round riding ability with the aim of emulating Wiggins and being a genuine overall contender in major stage races.
